3.3 Existing data sources for considering health and equity

Below is a list of data sources which project teams may wish to use to describe when developing a case for investment. These are all existing data sources i.e. they are already available and not reliant on new data collection.

This list is not an exhaustive as new data and evidence sources are published regularly. However, this page contains key sources and starting points for assessing who lives within the area of a proposed development and therefore where differential impacts could occur.

Public Health Scotland (PHS) Metadata Catalogue

  • The Public Health Scotland metadata catalogue is a resource that brings together all publicly available metrics broadly related to health and wellbeing in Scotland.
  • The indicators included in the metadata catalogue are population averages, or counts at the local authority, health board or intermediate zone (est. 2,500 - 6,000 household residents). Some indicators are only available only at national level.
  • The indicators or metrics cover a wide range of topics including employment, education, disability, long term conditions, addiction and mental health. Indicator data is published at different frequencies, many annually, but some range from quarterly to a 3 yearly basis.

EqIA Evidence Matrix

  • The Glasgow City Council EQIA Evidence Matrix (PDF, 3 MB)(opens new window) provides a starting point for the consideration of the potential wider health impacts by each protected characteristic.
  • The information accompanying the evidence matrix, will not provide a complete picture of the issues discussed, but provides an excellent starting point for understanding key trends in recent years.
  • Relevant trends can then be investigated further by examining additional research and/or consulting with those impacted.

Glasgow City Region Intelligence Hub Intraregional indicators

  • The Hub includes  intraregional indicators, which can be found here (Excel doc, 3 MB)(opens new window).
  • This resource captures socioeconomic statistics available at the local authority level and presents estimates for each Glasgow City Region local authority. These estimates have been sourced from publicly available datasets published by organisations such as the Office for National Statistics and the Scottish Government.
  • A protected version has been linked, alongside a manual which is embedded within the 'Cover' tab of the spreadsheet.

  • The Equality Evidence Finder - equality statistics published by Scottish Government.
  • Place Standard Tool - provides a framework to structure conversations about place. It allows users to think about the physical elements of a place (e.g., buildings, spaces, and transport links) as well as the social aspects (e.g., whether people feel they have a say in decision making).
