2.4 How long should the screening workshop be and who does what?

Workshop duration

The length of a CHIA screening workshop depends on the size of the policy or proposal, and number of participants, but between 2 ½ and 3 ½ hours is an approximate time frame. The size, scale and complexity of the workshop should be proportionate to the complexity of the proposal and the resources available.

Workshop roles

In the workshop, it can be useful to have a facilitator (or leader) of the discussion, a chair, and someone to record the main discussion points and outcomes or actions. It may be helpful to have a separate facilitator and chair so that someone can keep track of time and move the discussion on as needed.

Roles to consider include:

  • Chair - to chair, introduce and conclude the session
  • Workshop facilitator - to lead people through the checklist via facilitated discussion
  • Scribe(s) - to take notes during the session
  • Additional support - to manage other functions such as online chat/Padlet/whiteboard
  • Report writer - to write up a report from the workshop
  • Interpreter or communication support, if needed.

Some roles may be undertaken by the same person e.g. the scribe may also write the report, or the workshop facilitator may also chair the session.

If numbers of attendees are above 12, you may want to consider dividing people into smaller groups to review the checklist.
